Le Marche: Italy's Undiscovered Wine Region
Le Marche sits on the east coast of central Italy, wedged between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. It borders Tuscany and Umbria, yet has always lived in the shadow of those famous neighbours. Undeservedly so: wine from Le Marche is one of Italy's best-kept secrets — the same sun, similar hills, but fairer prices and characterful native grapes.
Sea breezes from the Adriatic coast and cool air from the mountains give the wines freshness and tension. Bianchello del Metauro: the Region's White Signature
Bianchello del Metauro is the white DOC of the Metauro valley, recognised since 1969 and made from the Bianchello grape (also known as Biancame). You'll rarely encounter this grape outside this corner of northern Le Marche, and hardly any shop in the Netherlands stocks the wine. The entry point is the Bianchello del Metauro DOC (€8.95): crystal-clear, light and fresh, with peach, white pear and white blossom.
